Stuff I Wore: Casual Friday on a Wednesday (OOTD 11.23.11)

Maybe this was a little too casual for a casual Wednesday?  But it was the day before Thanksgiving!  Who even does any work on that day.  Well, actually, I did.  I guess I felt entitled to dress down in exchange for the massive amounts of work I had to get done before the holiday.

My Deep Dark Coupon Secret

Source
So, I have a deep dark shameful secret: I coupon.  No, I am not one of those crazy people on TV that buys 600 boxes of cereal for $1.  (I only bought 4 boxes last week for $0.75 each).  But, I do have a small stockpile of non-perishable food and beauty items.  I have to make room in the budget somehow for all the clothes I buy!  Since I started couponing, I've been saving on average $200 a month.  I spend about $50-$100 a month on food an toiletries, where I used to spend $200-$300.  I like expensive things, but you can get them for cheap.
And here is a glimpse into my madness.

I keep most of my stockpile in my linen closet.  An over the door shoe organizer helps keep everything neat and tidy.
You can save a ton of money on canned goods.  I can't really keep food and beauty items completely separate because of the limited space in my small apartment.  Small drawer organizers also help keep things in their place

The remainder of my food stockpile is on the top shelf and in the kitchen.  I keep a large stockpile of cereal and pasta, since I eat them so often.  I also have a stockpile of travel sized items.  You can often get them for free if your coupon does not exclude travel sized items.

I've decided to come out of my stockpiled closet and share my coupon knowledge.  Ok, I have a crazy binder and an Excel spreadsheet, but I realize that's excessive.  A few little things can help you save a few dollars a month.  I'm going to focus on beauty items, since I am sure you don't read my blog to find out how much I paid for canned pineapple ($0.75 each, if you were really wondering).

The best places to buy beauty products are Walgreens, CVS, Target, and Rite Aid.  That's listed in order of how much work you'll have to do to save money.  You also need to check the coupon policies of each store...if you really want to get serious about this.

First things first, get yourself a Sunday paper, that's where you find the most coupons and the circulars for each store.  There are 3 different coupon inserts: Procter and Gamble (PG), Red Plum (RP) and Smart Source (SS).  The circulars are also on each store's website.

Second, you need to do specific things for each store, except Walgreens.

Walgreens is the easiest, you don't need any savings card and their coupons are right in the store circular which you can get in your paper or in the store.  With some purchases, Walgreens gives you Register Rewards, which are manufacturer's coupons that can be used on any thing at Walgreens.
CVS requires you to get an Extra Care card in order to take advantage of their special deals.  You can sign up in the store.  There are several benefits besides the sale prices.  You get a percentage back of what you spend every quarter in a coupon and you get special coupons from a machine in store.  CVS also gives you gift certificates (called Extra Bucks) with some purchases to be used for anything in the store.

To get the best prices at Target, you have to scour their website for coupons.  Target allows you to use one manufacturer's coupon and one Target coupon for each item purchased.

Rite Aid really makes you do the work.  You have to get their savings card (Wellness card), look up coupons on the Video Values site, look up coupons in their weekly circular AND sign up for their Single Check Rebate program.  So, there are a lot of new "coupon" words in there.  Video Values is a site that requires you to watch commercials in exchange for coupons.  The Single Check Rebate program is jut a rebate program.  You have to sign up for each on their website.  Rite Aid allows you to use a manufacturer's coupon, AdPerk coupon AND a Rite Aid coupon for the same item!!!  When these three things come together, you often get free stuff.  Rite Aid also gives you a coupon / gift card with some purchases called Up Rewards.

Ok, now that I have thoroughly confused and scared you.  I'll provide you with a few beauty deals each week.  If scouring circulars and making Excel spreadsheets is too daunting of a task for you, you can just go to various coupon websites and they summarize all the deals for you each week.  My favorites are: http://thekrazycouponlady.com/ and http://coupondivas.com/.

Here are my favorite beauty deals this week:

Stuff I Bought: Anthro Black Friday Sale

This year was the first time ever that I ventured out to shop on Black Friday.  Anthro's amazing sale was the one and only reason I dragged myself out of bed.  I got some really great stuff, including the long-coveted Button Belted Dress!!  Here's what I got, which maxed out my non-Christmas gift shopping budget until January"

I'm so excited to start wearing my new purchases this week.  After my Anthro shopping extravaganza, I went and bought a new artificial Christmas tree and then decorated my apartment for Christmas.  I also knew that my closets were long overdue for an overhaul.  The Salvation Army will be getting three garbage bags of my rarely worn clothes.  I will now be limiting myself to clothing that fits in my drawers and on the hangers currently in my closet.  And now that I have spoiled myself, let the gift shopping begin!

My new tree, fat cat not included.

Weekend Sale Roundup: BLACK FRIDAY

The biggest sale day of the year is upon us.  I normally do not participate in Black Friday and choose to remain firmly planted in bed in a food coma.  However, this year, Anthropologie's participation in the day is stirring me out of my hibernation (for a few hours).  I will also be on the hunt for a new artificial Christmas tree.  And, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  Don't let sale planning ruin your holiday.  Be calm and cram some food in your face.

The sales listed below are for BLACK FRIDAY ONLY, unless otherwise noted.

Vera Bradley: Get a free Holiday Tote with every purchase over $100 (11/25/11, Black Friday ONLY).

Anthropologie: As you probably know, all sale apparel will be 50% IN STORES ONLY.  Stores open as early as 6am, but call your local store to find out.

Banana Republic: 40% off your entire purchase before 1pm and 25% off your entire purchase after 1 pm.

Stuff I Wore: Yumi Skirt (OOTD 11.17.11)

The Yumi Skirt from Anthro might be one of the most comfortable pieces of work clothing I own.  The waist is stretchy, it's made of cotton and YOU DON'T HAVE TO DRY CLEAN IT!!!  Having a wardrobe full of Anthro clothes also means your dry cleaning bill sky rockets...and then I also just wind up re-wearing what are probably dirty clothes.  My standard of cleanliness is indirectly proportional to how much it costs me to clean an item of clothing.

Anthro on TV: Lemon Liftoff on 'Community'

This is a little late, but I've been a little too busy to post.

I love when I see clothing I own on TV.  It makes me feel so stylish.  This week one of my favorite Anthro pieces was featured on one of my favorite shows on one of my favorite actresses.
Annie (Alison Brie) with Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash) in this week's episode of 'Community.'

Annie (Alison Brie, also of Mad Men fame) on Community wore the Lemon Liftoff Blouse.  I really don't have much more to say about this other than I love Community and it is a travesty that NBC is putting the show on hiatus, yet keeping the abomination known as Whitney.  I am excited that 30 Rock will be back in January, but I assumed Whitney would get the ax.  Seriously, watching five minutes of that show made my brain tremble in fear.  Ok, well, I've gotten through my daily rant and I feel better.

Stuff I Wore: Polka Dots at the Office (OOTD 11.16.11)

I really have to get caught up on my outfit posts.  The Scot has been off from school for the past week and has been walking the dog for me in the morning, so I had extra time to primp in the mornings.  Seriously, walking the dog really cuts into my beauty regimen.  Now that she has had her fancy pants obedience training, I am supposed to be a good owner and reinforce it 20-30 minutes a day!!!  At least it seems to be working.  We walked past a group of rowdy teenagers the other night and she didn't even growl at them.  Although, I have to admit, I almost growled at them.  Anyway, here is my polka dot outfit.

Stuff I Love: November 2011 Edition

Here's the list of stuff I am loving this month:
1. Mindy Kaling.  She's cute, she's funny and seems to love food and despise working out as much as I do.  She has a great blog that I read almost everyday and a new book that I am dying to read when I get a spare second.
2. The Muppets.

Do not even try to tell me that you don't like The Muppets.  If you haven't seen The Muppets Take Manhattan, you did not have a childhood and I am judging your parents' ability to raise a child.  Seriously, please do not even tell me you don't get a little tear in your eye when you hear Rainbow Connection.  If you don't I refuse to believe you have a soul.  I will be seeing the new movie over Thanksgiving weekend.

Oh, and OPI designed a Muppet-inspired line of nail polishes.  Rainbow Connection may finally end my life-long hatred of glitter nail polishes.  (Seriously, they are lumpy and the WORST to try and remove).

Source
3. Animal Jewelry.  I like whimsical animals and I like rhinestones.  Do I even need to explains this?

5. Colored Tights (other than black and nude)
Source
I am really loving crazy-colored tights this season.  I haven't quite figured out how to wear them without looking like a 5 year old clown.  Hopefully I will be venturing out into the world soon in my multi-colored legwear.  So far, the lessons I've learned are to make the tights the focus of the outfit and match them with solid pieces or play off a color in a pattern.

6. Sweatpants as appropriate dinner attire.  Some families "dress for dinner." Not mine.  On Thanksgiving we try to spend as much time as possible in sweat pants.  My mom tries to spend as much time in her turkey-print turtle neck.
