Look What I Got: Getting Legit

Thanks to The Kinch Life Designs, this link-up just went legit with a new button!  And how legit is this linkup now?

Sorry, I couldn't find a clip of the 2 Legit 2 Quit video.  The best I can do is this:

It's mesmerizing.

And since this is a fashion link up, here's some pictures of me in a J. Crew skirt I got for $30 as a result of a missing button.  But I have already talk about that.  This post was just really an excuse to show a video of MC Hammer...or is it Hammer?

Top: Anthropologie (similar) | Skirt: J. Crew (worn) | Tights: Hue | Shoes: Marshall's |
Watch: Michael Kors (worn) | Bracelets: gift and Forever 21(worn here, here)

What I Wore Wednesday: Wind, Wind Go Away

I Adorn You Dress: Modcloth c/o Lendperk | Cardigan: The Limited |
Leopard Flats: J. Crew via Plato's Closet (worn here, similar here) | Wristlet: Nine West (borrowed)

Here I am, just having an average day standing on a windy street trying to look glamorous and not fall over.  Seriously, looking glamorous in the wind is tough work.  I was constantly pulling my hair out of my lip gloss and my dress out of my lady parts.  Why does TV tell me that there are fans on the set of fashion shoots?  If that is true, what kind of lip gloss are those ladies wearing?  I will pay tens of dollars for a lip gloss that is hair proof.
Do the pictures look a little blurry?  Well, that's because my cameraman was also having a tough time standing up in the wind.  He did not have the hair/lip gloss problem though.

Full Disclosure: This dress was provided to me free for one week.  From Lendperk.  I did not receive any other compensation for this post.  But, you can get a 9 day free trial of Lendperk AND be entered into a giveaway to win one free month of dress rentals if you sign up for an account between now and March 11th.

In the Caboodle: Cream Eyeliner Tips

A friend asked me this weekend, "What's that pot of black stuff that came in my Ipsy bag this month?"  It's cream eyeliner.  When I first discovered cream eyeliners a few years ago, I never looked back to my past life of pencil eyeliners, however, I realize not everyone is a convert or even realizes that there's this whole other world of eyeliners.  Personally, I think I have more control over the width of the line with cream liners and I get a crisper line.  Contact wearers like myself have to be careful about what liners they use and you shouldn't use liquid liner.  I think gel and cream liners give you a look more comparable to liquid liner.  It does take a little getting used to, so here are a few of my tips.

1. Get yourself a slanted brush.  The straight brushes just don't work as well.   You can't glide smoothly enough across your lid.

2. Make sure whatever liner you choose, it's smooth and creamy.  Some of the cream liners out there have a sticky texture (i.e. Stila) and I have found them to be difficult to put on.  My personal favorite is E.L.F., but I know others that swear by Tarte.

3. After you swipe the brush through the liner, wipe off extra on the inside of the jar.  Clumps of liner on the brush will give you an uneven line.

4. Clean your brush often.  If you let liner build up on the brush for a few days the brush won't glide across the lid and you'll get a thicker and thicker line as more liner accumulates on the brush.

5. Use a primer.  Ok, this is just general good advice for applying all eye makeup.

6.  Set the liner with a little matte black eye shadow.  I've found that when I do this my liner lasts all day and night.  I have woken up with perfect eyeliner after some late nights.

So any one going to try out cream liners?  Or do you already use them?

I'm giving you a pretty photo-heavy post after my weekend in Washington D.C.  It was a great weekend, but the weather was not.  I meticulously planned every moment of our weekend...but then it rained all day.  Oh, and the brunch place I picked out is no longer open on Saturdays.  After all the best laid plans were down the tubes, we wandered aimlessly and then popped over to the White House and the aquarium.  I freakin' love aquariums.  I am a fish nerd.  I was super excited because I saw a queen trigger fish put up it's little spine on top of it's head.  Possibly too excited because the Scot walked away and little kids laughed at me.  Really kid?  You just yelled "Nemo!" repeatedly for a half hour and you're judging me?   Seriously, trigger fish are awesome...go get your learn on and look them up.

And of course I did a little shopping.  Well, the shopping started because someone decided that ballet flats with no socks was appropriate feet attire for a rainy winter's day.  If you're wondering, those sexy black socks are from Forever 21.
Once my hair was sufficiently un-striaghtened after a day in the mist, we hunkered down at a bar in Adams Morgan, only leaving to grab a falafel at Amsterdam Falafel and to eventually go back to the hotel....in order to get ready to go to another bar for a friend's birthday.

On a Budget: Social Dress Shop

Boots: Macy's (worn here, similar here) |
Bracelets: giveaway win, Guess, Forever 21 (worn here, similar here, here & here)

A few weeks ago I won a shop credit to Social Dress Shop.  I was smitten with all of the pretty party dresses in the shop.  I couldn't make up my mind!  And then, Social Dress Shop started a "Budget Chic" section!  So, I bought two dresses.  When my dresses arrived I knew that me and Social Dress Shop would have a long relationship.  I wanted to get to know the brains of the operation that would be taking up some space on my bank statement.  So, here's my little interview with Sarah!

Q. How did you get started with Social Dress Shop?
A. Social Dress Shop has been a dream of mine for a few years, in one form or another. I literally woke up last year and decided to make my dream happen.

Q. How do you decide what items to sell in your shop
A. I am so so extremely proud of the designers that we carry. Many of my designers have the following in common: young female entrepreneurs, chose to manufacture in the US, and are incredibly knowledgable about the changing face of fashion. Also, since I am the buyer, with every dress I ask myself "would I wear this"? If the answer is no, I don't buy it.

Q. What prompted you to start the "budget chic" section of your website?
A. Budget Chic was something I wanted to do for my customers who said to me "I love your style, but I would love if you carried lower priced things". It was sort of an "ask and you shall receive  moment. "Budget Chic" has been live for two weeks and has really taken off. It has been a great business decision.

Q. Who are your style icons?
A. Olivia Palermo, Jenny Lewis & Sofia Coppola. Oh and who isn't influence by the Olsens, am I right?

Q. If you could be on any reality TV show, which one would it be?
A. This is a hysterical question as I have a friend who was just on one. Also, one of our newest designers is going to be on Fashion Star this season (Go Hunter Bell!). I hate any type of conflict or stressful situation, so I'd probably want to be on Barefoot Contessa, Ina is the coolest.

Q. What are some of your favorite pieces in your shop right now?
A. Without a doubt the Madison Marcus Hot Pink Neon Collar Dress, the Heidi Merrick Vegan Leather Dress, & all of the Rory Beca Maxi dresses!

Q. Who are some celebrities that have been seen wear items from Social Dress Shop?
A. Mostly bloggers, Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific just wore the Camilla and Marc Sofia dress from our store. But Zooey Deschanel is constantly seen wearing Erin Fetherston frocks (that she did not get from SDS ha)

Q. What celebrity would you LOVE to see wearing stuff from your shop?
A. I am pretty obsessed with Tina Fey, she's the most! Or either Fanning sister, how cool are they?

Q. Which celebrity would you HATE to see wearing stuff from your shop?
A. This is also hysterical. Hmm...
(Hey, it's Tara.  This is why I have a blog and not a shop.  I would've answered this question by saying I did not want the hot messes that are Lyndsay Lohan, Tara Reid and Amanda Bynes to wear my stuff.  In fact, I would send them items from competing clothing lines and hope that they had a vodka fueled rage in it.  Again, Sarah is a diplomatic awesome business lady...I mostly care about comedy.)

If you have a shop that you would like featured in "On a Budget," email me at pennilesssocialite@gmail.com.

Look What I Got: Everyday Costume Party

Dress: Thrifted | Tights: Hue | Shoes: Marshall's (worn here, similar here) |
Necklace: J. Crew Factory (similar here) | Belt: Marshall's (worn here, similar here) |
Bracelets: Forever 21, Guess (worn here & here, similar here, here & here)

I like to call this my 1970's mom dress.  Don't get me wrong, the lady who donated this to the Goodwill was obviously a hot mom back in the day (and maybe still is, I don't know), but this dress was meant to be worn by Kitty That 70's show...or maybe Mrs. Brady.  Oh well, I love this dress and it was $6.  Everyday is a costume party in my life.
