Friday's Fancies: Miriam Gonzalez Durantez

Source
While I was off in Scotland, I did get a chance to read the newspaper.  The entire female population of Scotland lost their collective sh*t over the white dress worn by Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister, to the Liberal Democrat Party Conference.  Seriously....it was front page news.  The dress was designed by Henrietta Ludgate, a Scottish designer that is committed to using locally sourced fabric.  The 'Chimera' dress worn by Durantez is made from Yorkshire jersey with the peplum detail at the hips made from recycled baseball cap peaks.
While I applaud her efforts to go green and support local designers, this dress is not exactly budget friendly at 390 lbs (about $630).  ( I don't know how to make the British money symbol in Blogger).  So, I created a budget-friendly version and added some accessories.  I tried my best.  The dress is from a UK store and the shoes are vegan.  You can donate the money you save on the dress to an environmentally minded charity.

I'm still recovering from the journey home from Scotland, so I will be back to regular blogging on Monday with stories of my adventures across the pond.

Guest Post: Brightly Colored Fall Pieces with The Tiny Heart

Today I am flying home from Scotland.  Although, I should be back pretty early in the day, I still needed some help with the blog.  So, while I am in a jet-lag induced coma, Sharon is here to talk about her Summer to Fall transition pieces.

Hi guys! I'm Sharon and from The Tiny Heart. I blog about petite fashion (I'm 4'10") and my life with my hubby (he's 6'4" if you were wondering) and our two dogs, Oliver and Jinx.

While Tara is off shopping at Dorothy Perkins (jealous!) and eyeing up men in kilts (also jealous), I'm going to show you how to transition a summer piece into fall.

Cardi-F21, Tank-A&F, Scarf-So Head to Toe {giveaway win}, Jeans-A&F, Flats-Target

You can still wear your summer tanks into the fall. Just add:

1. Cardigan in a bright color

2. Lightweight scarf

3. Flats (or boots if it's extra chilly)

You'll be warm and you'll get extra use out of your summer clothes!

Thanks so much to Tara for having me over today! Come say hi to me at The Tiny Heart.

Guest Post: A Dress for Two Seasons with Bitty and Bunny

Today I am enjoying my last full day across the pond.  So, Kym is here to end my confusion about what to wear during the wacky NJ September weather.  Is it Summer?  Is it Fall?  I need some fashion help.

Hello lovely Penniless Socialite readers!  Tara asked me to guest post while she's off in Scotland.  After snapping myself out of a men-in-kilt filled reverie (what, I know I'm not the only one who digs a guy in a skirt), I jumped at the chance.  I mean, an opportunity to be on Penniless Socialite while simultaneously helping out a fellow vegetarian style blogger who also hails from NJ?  Yes, please!
I'm Kym, by the way, and I blog about my style, musings, random thoughts, and other assorted nonsense over at bitty.and.bunny.  Since Tara gets mildly confused by dressing in September (poor thing), she's asked us to feature a summer to fall transition outfit.  Since I get confused by the words transition outfit, I decided to show you how you can style one piece (in this case a chevron-printed dress) for both summer and fall.
For summer I went for some print mixing and belted a striped tee shirt over the dress.  A pair of bright red heels and a statement necklace complete the look while keeping me cool in the heat.

target dress & top  |  payless shoes  |  thrifted belt  |  f21 necklace
To take this dress into fall, I piled on the coziness with lots of layers.  A chambray button-up, cardi, scarf, and boots up the comfy quotient, while a belt cinches in some of the bulk and adds a little shape.

target dress & cardi  |  old navy chambray & scarf  |  steve madden boots  |  h&m belt  |  f21 bracelets
So there you have it - one dress, two seasons.  I hope this inspires you to keep rocking your summer wardrobe right into fall!

Guest Post: Transitioning with Coffee and Cardigans

While I'm off galavanting through the highlands of Scotland, Callie is taking over the blog today to tell us how to dress for that awkward transition from Summer to Fall.  I won't be checking on the blog too much until Friday.  So, if you leave a comment and I don't respond, it doesn't mean I don't love ya!

Hello! I’m Callie and you can usually find me blogging over at Coffee and Cardigans. But I am thrilled to be here today, guest blogging for Tara while she’s on vacation.

If you ask me, the transitional time between summer and autumn makes getting dressed awkward. Here in Oregon, we’ve gone from the mid-60’s and rain one day, to sunshine and heat the next. And I know we aren’t the only ones. Shorts and sundresses aren’t enough, but a pair of tights and boots with your favorite sweater dress might be overkill. See? Awkward transitional period. For me, learning to layer and balance my outfits has been helpful technique for surviving until the chilly days of autumn arrive. Layering pieces are my essentials this time of year: cardigans, light scarves, a trusty denim jacket. Pieces that I can easily throw on over my outfit and peel off later if temperatures get too warm. My denim jacket is one of my go-to pieces, since it goes with just about anything. I love throwing it over a dress or tank on chilly mornings or overcast days. 9 5 12 a Balancing out an outfit with seasonal pieces of also a help tactic when it comes to beating unpredictable weather. If I am wearing shorts, a skirt, or a dress, throwing a cardigan or light jacket on over the top added a little extra coverage and warmth. Or opting for a short sleeve shirt or tank when I’m wearing jeans or pants also helps to “keep the balance.” 9 13 12 a Personally, I can’t wait until autumn arrives in full force and I can wear tights, scarves, and long sleeves every day. Until then, I’ll be mixing and matching seasonal pieces to beat the awkward, unpredictable Pacific Northwest weather. What are your go-to pieces for surviving the summer-to-fall transition?

Guest Post: Fall Beauty Essentials from Daily Living in Geneva

Right now I am halfway through my adventures in Scotland.  In order to keep this little blog chugging along while I'm away, I've got a few friends lined up this week to blog about fashion and beauty to help you through this Fall transition.  Bea (one of my September sponsors) is taking over today to tell us about her 5 Fall beauty essentials.   I won't be checking on the blog too much until Friday.  So, if you leave a comment and I don't respond, it doesn't mean I don't love ya!

Hi there!

My name is Bea and I blog over at Daily Living in Geneva. It's my first guest post ever and I'm really excited about it!

Today I want to talk about my 5 beauty essentials/favourite beauty trends for Fall.

So here we go!

FACE: Just because summer is over, it doesn't mean you have to leave your glowing healthy skin at home. Healthy skin starts with hydration, and this line from Clarins, Éclat du jour (Daily Energizer) specific for younger skins would improve your skin day by day and get it glowing and protected against the increasing cold. With a very decent prize range for the brand and formulated with natural ingredients it will delight even older skins!!

LIPS: One of my favourite trends of all times that repeats on and on when fall comes is red bold lips. But I'll be honest here, red lips sometimes are hard to pull off...so here is my proposals for the perfect warm fall look that would complete all skin tones! Revlon Colorbust Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie and Maybelline Colorsensational Bit of Berry.

EYES: When it comes to eye make up fall is the perfect season for brown smokey looks. For a day look I would go for something simple: one over the lid neutral color and smudged eyeliner. Perfect for back to school or daily work look! Easy, classy and quick! For a pop of color you can combined it with a dark lip like the berry tones above.
Source
For night's out however, I can´t get over this gorgeous dark teal smokey look by Mac for Jason Wu Fall 2012. I think it's so pretty! For something in between, use black or brown eyeliner to line your upper line and a teal or light color for your lower or water line. This one is subtle enough for day time.  Get this look by blending Mac's Kelly Green Pigment and Club Eyeshadow on the lid and blending in Minted Eye Kohl blended in the crease.

CHEEKS: When it comes to blushes, one of the trends this season is pale rosy cheeks. If your skin tone is on the lighter side then go for it. For medium to dark skin tones, the group where I fall in, my personal preference a deep coral. Like these from Rimmel in Coral and NYC in South St. Shell.

NAILS: Last but not least is nails!  Bright and dark colors are going strong this season, but I can´t help it. There is nothing more elegant and classy that a french manicure.

Well, this is it! I hope you liked this post as much as I liked putting it together. What are your favourite trends or beauty essentials for this fall? Hope you go over Daily Living in Geneva and let me know!

Friday's Fancies: Fantasy Football

Friday's Fancies: NY Giants

Friday's Fancies: NY Giants by veggielawyer

Well, after the second week of fantasy football, I am in 11th place out of 12 and I have 2 running backs and a tight end that are hurt.  If you have a vendetta against an NFL player, let me know and I'll put him on my team.  I think for everyone's safety, I should just delete my team.  Peyton Manning was the only reason I beat my opponent this week.  I don't normally root against Peyton Manning, but when I am up by 16 points before Monday Night Football and he's on the opposing team, I hope for interceptions.  Sorry Peyton.  I really needed the win.  You'll bounce back.

I won't be watching football this week as I am in Scotland on vacation.  I'll be back next Friday.  Stay tuned for some awesome guest posts next week.  Unfortunately, there won't be any sale posts this weekend AND I won't be able to respond to your comments until I return.  I know.  You're heart broken.  But, I really need this vacation.

On a Budget: Fall Fashion

This is a scheduled post as I am currently on vacation in Scotland.  Yay!  I won't be able to respond to your comments until next Friday.  So, if I don't get back to you, it doesn't mean I don't love ya!

So, my Anthro on a Budget posts went over so well, that I've decided to branch out and include other retailers.  There are so many Fall items I want, but my wallet just isn't full of enough cash.
Peplum Sweater Frugal Options

Peplum Sweater Frugal Options by veggielawyer

I swooned when I saw the peplum sweater in Tory Burch's Fall line.  However, I cried a little when I saw the price tag.  I found the best three options I could for an affordable peplum sweater.  However, it looks like many affordable retailers have not transferred the peplum trend into their Fall lines.

J. Crew Chicken Sweater Frugal Option

J. Crew Chicken Sweater Frugal Option by veggielawyer

J. Crew's chicken sweater is ADORABLE.  Who doesn't love a chicken in a beret?  However, I don't think I love it as much as my monthly grocery bill.  Although no retailers are offering a sweater with a cartoon chicken in a sassy hat, Target has some other cute animal options.

Fluted Ponte Dress Frugal Option

Fluted Ponte Dress Frugal Option by veggielawyer

Ok, I know I said I was branching out to other retailers, but I could not resist showing you this adorable (and affordable) dress from Sheinside.  How cute would that dress be with come black tights and black flats?  Maybe red flats?  Am I getting too crazy here?
J. Crew Pave Link Bracelet Frugal Options

J. Crew Pave Link Bracelet Frugal Options by veggielawyer

I loved this chunky J. Crew bracelet at first sight.  It's the perfect addition to any arm party.  But, at $125, it's more expensive than all my bracelets combined.  I couldn't find anything bargain priced that is jewel encrusted, but I these pretties have that same chunky link look.

Loving Lately: Collar Necklaces

Collar Necklaces

 1 / 2 / 34 / 5 / 6 / 78 / 9

Via Cotton & Curls
1. In place of an actual collar.  This is the most obvious way to wear this trend, however, not all collar necklaces are conducive to this.  The fabric-backed necklaces (like 1 and 2 above) or beaded lattice ones (like 5 above) are best for this look  I think the only tricky part is finding the right shirt to pull it off.  The shirt has to have a neckline that is hidden by the necklace, so that the necklace becomes the neckline.  You also have to balance the necklace with the print of the shirt.  The intricacy of your collar necklace should be inversely proportional to the boldness of the pattern on your shirt.  (i.e. you can pair a plainer collar necklace, like #2, with a patterned shirt; but pair bolder and more colorful necklaces like #9 with simpler tops)
2. Under a Collared Shirt.  It's like a double collar.  It sounds silly, but looks so cute.  Personally, I think the metallic ones (like 6 and 7 above) work best this way, but the jeweled ones (like #4 above) could also work.

Via Alterations Needed
3. With a plain tee or sweater.  Your collar necklace can also just be a necklace and not a pseudo collar.  Let some of neckline of the shirt be seen.  I think almost any collar necklace works with this trend.  I think it looks best with a scoop neck or crew neck tee.  A v-neck plus the necklace creates too many complicated shapes in one area.  However, that's just my personal taste.

Via Style Bistro
4. With a low cut shirt or dress.  This is the scariest way, in my opinion, to wear these necklaces.  If you choose the right style, you look chic, if you choose the wrong style you look like a Playboy bunny.  I love the way the plain gold collars (like #6) look with a black evening look.

I think the one rule to follow when wearing a collar necklace is to KEEP IT SIMPLE.  You already have a bold shaped necklace, you don't also need a bold print or odd-shaped neckline too.

Weekend Update: Baby Shower, Beer and Nail Polish

Top // Marshall's (similar here); Skirt // Thrifted (worn here, similar here); Shoes // Jessica Simpson (worn here, similar here); Necklace // Kohl's (similar here); Bracelets // Guess and F21 (worn here, similar here and here)

Before I launch into my weekend update, am I getting boring my color choices?  Oh well, this is my blog and I will make it an ode to navy and mustard if I want.

My weekend was a baby shower sandwich.  I sandwiched a attending a baby shower in between Saturday and Sunday shopping.  Since I was one of the few people there that was not pregnant and didn't have any kids, I sat with a friend and we talked about our cats.  That's not weird, right?  I didn't take any pictures of the baby shower, but I managed to take pictures at the mall.  I am an awesome photographer.  That outfit isn't even what I wore to the shower.  My baby shower outfit was so super awesome it deserves its own post, so I am saving it.
And here is my weekend rundown...I received an ombre lace iPhone case from Debonair Bandit as part of a recent giveaway win, used a lingering Forever 21 gift card to pick up some pretties, found the perfect dress to wear on the plane to Scotland (I hope you can sense the sarcasm), finally got my hands on the candy corn M&M's (which are changing my life), started packing for my upcoming vacation, gave myself a little mani with polishes I received from Britt of The Denny Buzz in a little polish swap, and had my favorite pumpkin beer, Riverhorse Hippolantern.  I hope you're prepared to hear a lot about pumpkin beer in the upcoming weeks, because it's one of my favorite things in the world.  The Scot asked me if I planned on buying any food in the next few weeks or if I planned for us to just live on pumpkin beer.
