Dresssing Up Like Mindy Kaling

IMG_0505
No. 2 Pencil Skirt: J. Crew (in different colors, worn) |
Gingham Shirt: J. Crew Factory (worn, exact, ON SALE) |
Shoes: White House Black Market (similar steal & splurge) |
Rumba Gem Drops: Bauble Bar (similar) |
Watch: Michael Kors | Bracelet: Banana Republic (similar)

Mindy Kaling is pretty much my fashion and life icon.  Every episode of The Mindy Project gives me some inspiration for a new outfit.  I knew I wanted to emulate this outfit.  When I saw it on the show, I thought the earrings looks a little Baublebar-esque.  And my fashion intuition was spot on, because The Mindy Project's costume designer teamed up with Baublebar for a line.   I pretty much wanted every thing from the line.  However, I settled for my sparkly studs.  I had to tone down Mindy's outfit a bit for work.  I am not lucky enough to work in an OB/GYN office that also doubles as a J. Crew catalog shoot.  At least I was able to exactly duplicate her earrings.

Look What I Got: Cheap Florals and Stripes

banana republic floral and stripes 1
Floral Print Blazer: Banana Republic (exact) | Mixed-Stripe Puff Sleeve Top: Banana Republic (exact)
Skirt: J. Crew via Poshmark (similar) | Shoes: ShoeDazzle (worn, similar) |
Necklace: StyleLately (worn, similar) | Glamour Link Bracelet: Banana Republic (worn, exact)
Bangle: C. Wonder Store (worn, similar) | Rings: Vintage Avon

If this outfit was int he showcase showdown on The Price is Right, just the blazer, sweater and skirt would be valued at $315.  If The Price is Right only featured clothing from J. Crew and Banana Republic, I would totally rock that game.  But, alas, my knowledge of prices of home goods and jet skis is limited.  Because that's what's really holding me back from winning the showcase showdown....not the insurmountable task of actually getting on the show.  Well, anyways if Bob Barker (Drew Carey?) told you to "Come on down," you'd probably win the first round by guessing that the bulk of my outfit is worth $300.  (Remember, you can't go over....and I hate those people that would guess $301).  However, if you were on the Penniless Socialite Price is Right, this outfit would be valued at $60.   Yes, shopping sales at Banana Republic and Poshmark is pretty worth it.  Maybe I am just not cut out to be a contestant on The Price is Right.  I mean, they pay retail on that show....yuck!

It's a Scarf, It's a Necklace....It's a Scarflace!

Scarf: c/o Glamplaza | Top: thrifted (worn) | Skirt: J. Crew | Boots: DSW (similar) |
Sunglasses: c/o Firmoo |

An outfit isn't complete without an accessory like a scarf or a necklace.  I love them both...but sometimes you can't wear both.  Enter the Pendant Scarf from Glamplaza.  When I first saw this "scarflace" (a term I have coined myself) on Glamplaza I knew that it would be an easy breezy accessory.  It instantly adds something to an outfit and you don't have to choose between wearing a scarf or a necklace!

Look What I Got Link Up: 99 Luftballoons

Top: Forever 21 | Skirt: J. Crew (worn, similar) | Shoes: Shoe Dazzle (similar)
Bracelets: Forever 21, Guess & Bauble Bar (worn here & here)

I thought the title was pretty clever.  I loved the song 99 Luftballoons as a kid...despite the fact that it came out the year I was born and that I recently found out that it's an anti-nuclear war song.  I was apparently a pretty deep kid.
If you haven't figured it out based on the title, this top was a thrifty $24.99 at Forever 21.  I can't find it online any more, but it might still be in stores.

Belated Halloween and a $25 Gap Giveaway!

I celebrated Halloween at an appropriate time, but then caught what I can only assume is the plague.  I've been in bed and unable to celebrate the sacred holiday of Halloween on the blog.  And since I don't like to waste any of the Scot's precious photography skills, here are the pictures of my costume.  And in case you hate fantastic movies and books...the Scot and I went as the Fantastic Mr. Fox and Mrs. Fox.

I am a firm believer in not purchasing a Halloween costume.  The Scot and I had everything we needed for our Mr. and Mrs. Fox costumes in our closets...except the fox ears and tails.  We bought those.
And because I am so backed up on bloggy work...I also have a $25 Gap giveaway for you!

I want to introduce you to one of my long time sponsors and favorite bloggers: Carissa of Lilies & Silk!

What I Wore Wednesday: Business Casual Sweatshirt

Sweatshirt: Ann Taylor LOFT (similar here) | No. 2 Pencil Skirt: J. Crew (worn here) |
Booties: Target (worn here, similar here) | Necklace: ?? (similar here) |
Bracelets: Cool Water Gems | Watch: Michael Kors

Yep, I wore a sweatshirt to work.  What?  It has sparkles on it AND I wore it with a pencil skirt.  That totally makes it business casual.  It goes from the office to the couch.

On another note, the second this sweatshirt is off my body, the cats are trying to remove every single sequin.  Wait, that's a lie.  They don't even wait until I take it off.

Stuff I Wore: Photo Hunt

So, I found a new location indoors to take pictures that gets a bit more natural light.  However, I did not prep this location for a photo shoot.  (Also, I don't know why I look like a cross-eyed mannequin.)  Can you find three things in this photo that evidence my laziness?
Polyvore Set
Bird Print Blouse // Old Navy
No. 2 Pencil Skirt and Necklace // J. Crew, worn here, similar here
Brown Sweater Tights // Hue
Belt and Shoes // Target, worn here, similar shoes here
Are you tired of this belt / shoe combo yet?  (I also wore this combo here)

According to this photo, I can not be bothered to put away holiday decorations on time, return a space heater to the rental office or clean up dog toys.  I never blogged about it because my anger was too all consuming and I didn't want to seem crazy, but my apartment had no heat for almost an entire month.  To remedy this problem, my landlord gave me a space heater.  Yeah, that helped...NOT!  The heat was only fixed after a certain litigious tenant called the local Board of Health and alerted them that the landlord was breaking several laws by not providing heat.  I will not reveal the identity of this tenant.
Any way, back to my laziness.  This picture was taken several weeks after Valentine's Day and after the heat was returned.  And I really need to accept the fact that a dog can not pick up after herself.  And I really need to find a different location for photos that doesn't include a dog bed.

And I want to give a little shout out to Katie at Hems for Her, who is also a proud owner of this blouse.  TWO bloggers have this shirt, it must be awesome, right?!

I don't know if those are scratches on my table or cat hairs.  Either is very possible.

Stuff I Wore: Stroke of Genius (OOTD 1.11.12)

This outfit inspired me to try something.  I hadn't worn these shoes in awhile and I wondered why.  And after a day of wearing them, I realized why they were banished to the back of my closet...they are instruments of pain.  Because I do not want to inflict this kind of pain on any other human being, they went directly in the garbage.  I know it's a waste, but seriously, you would be better off walking around barefoot.
Cardigan; Similar Skirt; Similar Tank
Polyvore Set
And thus, I decided to start the Use it or Lose it Challenge.  The gist of it, is that you pick out some items from your closet that you haven't worn in awhile and you get 30 days to wear them or you get rid of them.

I've picked my 10 items and will feature them here over the next month, and then update you on what I kept and what got a one way ticket to the consignment shop.

And yet another bird print in my collection.

These shoes bypassed the consignment shop and went right in the trash.
They're cute, but deadly.  Don't be fooled.
